Matt had his colon resection surgery today, and all went as planned. He's at the hospital for at least a couple of nights but is recuperating well so far.
For the last several weeks, he has been feeling great. After all the initial tests and labs, including some genetic testing our whole family might benefit from, he's been just spending time with family and trying to get loose ends tied up at work in preparation for today.
The surgery started after lunchtime and lasted a long 3 hours. They estimate having taken out 8 to 10 inches of his colon as well as surrounding lymph nodes. It's the testing of those lymph nodes that will really determine if there's been any spread of the cancer and next steps. Fingers crossed the doctor's original thought that there was no evidence of spread holds true.
Stacey is staying up there in the oh-so-comfortable guest accommodations in his room tonight.
Matt was even able to call Mom tonight briefly. He was pretty groggy but said he was feeling ok and not in any pain.
Our aunt and uncle Jan and Harry came in from Georgia this week to help hold down the fort in Austin so Stacey can spend her time at the hospital. Mom would have loved to go down, but she had her first chemo treatment last week and is getting her strength back.
Thank you all again for your support of our family! I'll update more as I get any additional info.
Alicia
